And it was the summer of Steve Smith's redemption, as he made his mark on each Test he played in and carried Australia over the line to retain the Ashes after the series was tied 2-2.

The summer was also special for the arrival of Jofra Archer. His sparkling debut added a good deal of sting and fire to the belly of England's pace attack.

While not the greatest series (that still remains, to the makers of Minden anyway, the 2005 Ashes), it was a compelling battle between two equally weighted sides.
